Day 1 - Katherine is only 106kms down the road, no need for us to hurry in the morning so we were up at our normal time and then on our way by 9.45am. We were returning to Manbulloo Homestead where we had stayed previously, it is about 10kms outside Katherine and a great stop. We booked ahead because we particularly wanted to stay here and we were glad we did by the time we arrived they only had 3 powered sites left. We paid and were given our site number it was a bit difficult to back in because it was between two trees but we managed and we were soon set up. We drove into Katherine after lunch to take care of some business we needed to do and shopping and then back to camp for the afternoon. A quiet afternoon, we had internet but it wasn’t very good I don’t think I am going to be able to load my blog. I will write it and save on word and edit my photos at least that will save a bit of time when we do find decent internet.
We started our day with a drive down to the Cutta Cutta National Park where we wanted to take the caves tour, however, when we arrived, we couldn’t take the tour because I wasn’t wearing proper footwear. Never mind where there is a will there is a way and we decided to walk the route usually taken by the tour and the only thing we couldn’t do was walk down into the cave but I could walk down the stairs to the entry and I did manage to take a few good photos here. We did learn a little bit though by sitting and listening to the guide as he finished a tour and answering questions up the top of the cave. This cave is the only hot cave in Australia, there is only one entrance to the cave which doesn’t allow for air flow and this causes the heat. The National Park is fascinating with lots of limestone rock formations spread across this part of the park. From here we drove to the Katherine Airport but there wasn’t much to see here so we drove into town to visit the historic railway but unfortunately this was blocked off and all I could do was take a few photos through the fence. All was not lost because there is lots of interesting wall art around Katherine and I managed to take a few photos around town. We decided to drive out to Nitmiluk Gorge (Katherine Gorge) for a bit of a look. We had taken the tour last time so didn’t feel the need to do it again but we thought it would be nice to walk down to the water for a few photos. The first thing we noticed were the huge number of bats in the area, I am sure they weren’t here last time so maybe it is a seasonal thing, it was a very pleasant walk down to the water, we were a bit naughty and walked past the restricted area to get better photos of the gorge. The photo of the tree below with what looks like seed pods hanging off, they are all bats and every tree in the area was the same.
