We had been away for 9 months doing the big loop around Australia. Before we left we had planted our garlic for the year, we usually plant around 500 cloves but cut back a bit this year because we were relying on our watering system to keep the plants going while we were away and we were a bit concerned something may not work and we would lose them all so we settled for planting between 200-300 cloves. As it turned out we probably didn't even need the watering system because there was so much rain which caused the garlic to be a bit smaller than usual, they don't appreciate too much water. I have been digging up the smaller bulbs for use since we have been home, they taste just as good what ever size they are but today I finally had a bit of time to harvest the remainder of the crop. I was pleasantly surprised with the size of the ones I dug up today, some were small but the majority were a good size. I have tied them up and now have them hanging up on their hooks in the Alfresco Room to dry and my goodness, the smell from them is absolutely amazing, every now and again I pop out there just to have a good sniff. Being able to use your own fresh produce in your cooking is an exhilarating experience and the flavours are so much better than anything you can purchase.
