Building Our Yards

We purchased our block 20 plus years ago and built our house 18 years ago later this year. When we first moved in we were sitting on a sand dune one kilometre from the coast and when I say a sand dune that is exactly what I mean, we were constantly cleaning the sand out from indoors and at one stage we had our water tank cleaned because it was 3/4 full of sand. We had a row of pine trees on the southern border of the block of which we removed 20 of the ones that were most likely to fall on the house in a storm, we probably should have removed them all but retrospect is an amazing thing. We were running two businesses when we first moved in so there wasn't much time to do anything with the block. We had someone come in and plant 800 trees around the perimeter, we lost a lot of them but still have a few to show for our efforts and a lot have reseeded. Being on the coast we have very strong winds so most of our trees are leaning on an angle, that's fine we are happy to have the trees still growing. Neither Robb nor I are gardeners by any stretch of the imagination but over the years we have made lots of efforts to grow anything from trees, flowers and vegetables and since we have retired we have found we enjoy this particular activity so have put more effort in and our skills are slowing building. We have just spent the last two weeks clearing and replanting because we are housebound because of Covid-19 and just thought I would share our story with you.
