Sumthin' Tastee for Coffee Steelworks Tour and Hummocks Hill For Sunset

We love our morning coffee and had noticed this outlet on our first day driving through town. We decided to stop off here the next day before meeting up at the information centre for our excursion. We put through our normal order and the coffee was pretty good when we received it but we asked about the sausage rolls and pies heating that looked really good. We called back here for lunch and both ordered a seafood pie and my husband wanted a bit of carrot cake. All the food was very tasty but the pies could have been hotter, one of my pet hates, and I normally ask if the pies are hot but didn't on this occasion. The carrot cake was very full of carrot and walnuts and very and we both enjoyed it.

From here we travelled to the Visitor Information Centre to pick up our tour of the Steelworks. We have traveled quite a bit and this must be one of the more interesting tours we have been on. Our guide Rod had lots of information to give us and could answer our questions easily. This is a huge complex and we came away feeling like we had some understanding of the whole process. We thought the cost for the tour was reasonable and we would both recommend this tour to anyone visiting Whyalla. We also came away understanding the importance to this isolated town of keeping the industry viable.

We left the tour and then traveled onto Point Lowly which is part of the Freycinet Trail along this coastline to view the Point Lowly lighthouse which turned out to be a small complex which included the Lighthouse, Point Lowly house and a some other buildings surrounding the lighthouse. We then traveled around further to Fitzgerald Bay where we had a great view over Spencer Gulf and then onto Shingle Beach Ridges which is another fascinating area with this huge ridge of red shingles following the coastline. The shingle ridges are really worth a visit. It is a geological area of some significance and I believe one of only a couple in the world. Apart from that it is quite stunning to see this beautiful red ridge running along this startling coastline. This is an easy track to find and well worth the effort, from here we drove back to our van, we were low on fuel so made a decision to fuel up both the car and ourselves and then to decide what to do.

We were both happy to have some down time for the afternoon, we had decided to drive to Hummock Hill for sundown to see if I could get some good photos but unfortunately it was a bit of a fizzer so I took some photos with the lights on and then returned to the van for dinner.
