We started our day with a visit to Baker Bear's cafe in Port Broughton we ordered our coffee and Robb wanted a custard tart so we sat and had a read while he ate the tart and then when he was finished we took our coffees and hopped in the car to start the days exploring.
Our first stop was Wallaroo where we wanted to visit the museum and have a look around town where there are lots of historic buildings. We have visited many museums in our travels but we were interested in this one because of the maritime aspect and because the ports around the copper coast have such a fascinating maritime history. We enjoyed our time here and it is very obvious that there has been a huge effort by volunteers to make this a really good display. You can see where the museum has been added to lately and it has a more up to date look. Entry was $8 each, more than reasonable for the experience. After this we had a quick drive around town to have a look at some of the beautiful buildings.
From Wallaroo we drove onto Moonta which has an interesting mining history. We drove into town to the Moonta Train station so that I could get photos to send to our son and found that the Information Centre was here, so while we were here I inquired about the tourist train that takes you around the mining area but unfortunately it wasn't running today, it will be running tomorrow but we have other plans so we will see how we go. We took a map of the mining trail and set off in the car to have a bit of a look. This was well worth doing and I think I would recommend to people if the train is not running on the day you are there just do the drive, there is a lot to see and it is well worth the time.
From Moonta we drove to Kadina which seems to be the largest town in this area. We did not want to have a look at another museum so we drove to the water tower which has been painted and took a couple of photos here and then we were delighted to see an Aldi store so we called in here to pick up supplies for the next few days. When we hopped back into the car there was a message on the screen to say Robb's car key battery was low so we googled Mitsubishi Dealers in the area and there was one around the corner so we went there and changed the battery.
After Kadina we drove back to the caravan park for lunch, we were looking forward to a salad and didn't want anything too heavy because we will be going out to dinner for Robb's birthday today. We had a couple of calls from the kids on our way back wishing Robb happy birthday and it was nice to catch up with all the latest news. After lunch we caught up with a few things around the van we wanted to do and I caught up with my photos while Robb had a read. We had decided to go to the Port Broughton Hotel for his birthday dinner as it was recommended by the park manager, we were really hoping to have Japanese or seafood but we will make up for that later on.
When we were leaving there was a beautiful sunset which I managed to capture a few photos of.
We arrived at the hotel just after 6.00pm, early for dinner for us but we didn't want to be out too late, we were hoping for something special and that is what we got. Robb had the Reef and Beef and I had the Macadamia Chicken, both meals were cooked as we asked and I just didn't want to stop eating. There was also an excellent salad bar with a good variety and the option I tried were all very fresh. The pricing was good, what you would expect without being to costly. He had a beer and I had a sparkling piccolo so nothing special in the drinks, service was good and the hotel itself is a beautiful old building that we enjoyed looking around.
