We were leaving Millicent this morning after a lovely couple of days catching up with our friend Annette. This is one of those friendships that it doesn't matter how long you have been apart you just fall into the old attachments and we are hoping to encourage Annette to come and visit us at home. We were up at 8.15am and ready to leave at 9.00am, we have this packing up down pat now. We set the GPS and started driving towards Kingston S.E. On the way we took a brief detour to Robe. We had purchased a coffee each in Millicent and it was really good. It turns out it was Mahalia Coffee and because we were driving from Millicent to Meningie the next day we thought we would visit the Mahalia Coffee outlet in Robe on our way and pick up our morning brew. We weren't disappointed and the gift shop attached to the outlet is well worth a visit. They also serve a limited menu of breakfasts and lunches and they have a great range of cakes, muffins and slices available for sale. Back in the car driving towards Kingston S.E. again and then onto Meningie.
We arrived in Meningie in good time and drove straight to the caravan park to book in. This is just a quick stopover for us and Meningie was a convenient distance from our last stop so it was an easy choice. The park itself is quite lovely sitting on the banks of Lake Albert with views over the water and lots of birdlife. The girl in the office who booked us in was very friendly and we thought the rates were quite reasonable. We chose a drive through site but if you prefer, for a few extra dollars, you can have a site on the lake. It had been a beautiful day today and the sunset tonight was very pleasing.
When we had stopped at Mahalia Coffee in Robe and said we were driving to Meningie and the lady serving us suggested we visit the Lakeview Cafe and try their fish and chips. We bought a fish and chip pack for two for $13 and took it over the road to the lions park and found a table to sit in the sun to eat our lunch. The fish was very fresh and the chips were good, I find it hard to find good chips these days. There was plenty in this pack for the two of us so we thought that was good value. The gentleman who served us was very friendly and spent a bit of time suggesting places for us to visit in town. I have to say too that this was the cleanest cafe/take away shop I have ever seen.
After lunch we drove up to the Meningie Lookout. We only had an afternoon in Meningie so we tried to make the most of it by visiting the suggested attractions on the information brochure we had. The Lookout was one of these so we drove up the road to the lookout and parked and walked the last 20 mts and climbed the steps to the lookout itself. The views were pleasant but nothing to write home about. There has been a lot of work put into the area and the Lions Club had a big input to this and needs to be congratulated.
From the Lookout we took a drive around Lake Albert, we had noticed earlier the number of pelicans on the lake and I was hoping to get a few shots of them. We sat for awhile watching them at one of the stops where perches had been set up for them out in the lake, there has obviously been a bit of work put into the lake area to encourage birdlife.
Our last stop was the cheese factory museum beside the caravan park. It was not manned and relied on donations for entry. It is a very simple museum and not well set up and didn't really seem to be about the history of the cheese factory in Meningie but just a general collection of bits and pieces.
