Port Fairy Griffiths Island Koroit Tower Hill and Killarney Beach

GRIFFITHS ISLAND - We drove towards Port Fairy and then followed the road up to Griffiths Island and went a little bit further on where we stayed and watch a group of surfers out in the ocean waiting for a wave to ride in on. It is turning into a lovely sunny day and the outlook over the water is fantastic so we headed back to Griffiths Island to have a look. There is a walk directly to the lighthouse that takes 30 minutes and another walk that skirts the island and takes 45-60 minutes. The paths are well defined but feel like they could be a bit slippery. There is a lovely little hut at the start of the walk with information on the local birds and a history of the lighthouse.

PORT FAIRY - We drove from Griffiths Island back into Port Fairy and looked for the Visitors Information Centre which was relatively easy to find following the signs and beside the centre was a market in progress, bonus for us we love a good market. We found a park and then walked back to the market to have a look around. There was a variety of stalls but we targeted the coffee truck because we hadn't had our coffee for the day. It was a good coffee so with that in hand we went to see what else we could find. We came across a pie and sausage roll truck and they looked so good we purchased some for dinner tonight and of course I couldn't pass the dumpling truck without sampling. We had a look at the fresh produce which all looked excellent including a stall selling what looked like fruit and vegetables that may not be acceptable in stores and was selling cheaply. We didn't need anything or I would have stocked up with some of the very funny looking carrots, parsnips and beetroot. Next we came to a truck selling bread which smelt so good and we both liked the look of a Parmesan/pumpernickel loaf so we snaffled that up for lunch today, we did pretty well not knowing the market was there with our meals for the day sorted. We went from here into the Information Centre to see if they had a trail for the historic buildings and they did so we took one and also grabbed a map and then we went for a look around town. It is a very pretty town and there were a lot of people in all the streets with the cafe and coffee shops full of people both inside and out. I photographed some of the nicer buildings and then we took off for our next stop.

KOROIT - We left Port Fairy and drove towards Koroit,an historic Irish town that is on the road to Hamilton, we were once again in search of beautiful old buildings. We found Koroit easily enough and drove down the main street where we found a few interesting buildings but nothing too spectacular so we thought we would drive to Tower Hill to have a look around, so we drove back following the signposts and noticed lots of church steeples in the distance and made a quick left hand turn in their general direction and this is where we found old Koroit. There were wall to wall churches in this area, all a bit different and all with their own special attraction. We came across the Koroit Botanical Gardens so parked to take a walk through here. The gardens are very well maintained and quite beautiful, they would be great to visit at any time of year but a picnic in summer would be perfect. From here we followed the church trail to have a better look at these buildings and then finally came to what was the old Koroit Convent and currently Saint Patrick's Luxury Boutique Hotel, such a magnificent building that is currently for sale, oh to have the money.

TOWER HILL RESERVE - After a good look around the churches we moved onto Tower Hill Reserve. We had visited here two years ago at which time I had climbed the hill so I didn't see the need to do it again. My focus this time was the wonderful scenery and wildlife. We slowly drove into the area heading towards the cafe/souvenir/information centre and then we parked. We had stopped a few times on the way here so that I could photograph the lake which looked quite full at the moment and the beautiful walls of what once was the volcano. We then walked the reserve area and were lucky enough to see a beautiful emu poking around looking for food. For those who are more adventurous than us there are many walks you can take and if we were staying in the area longer I think I would like to investigate them all because they are not very long and there is such a lot to see, maybe next time.

KILLARNEY BEACH - On the way back we drove past the camping ground onto the beach. I couldn't remember visiting here last time but I am sure we would have so we took a walk down on the beach to check it out. The beach itself reminds me of one of our favourite areas in South Gippsland called Bear Gully, Robb did think about throwing a line in but that idea didn't come to pass. Back to our second home to sit in the beautiful sunshine.
