We were up at our normal time and packed up the van and we were on the road within three quarters of an hour of rising, we really have this process down pat now. We headed towards Warrnambool and stopped at Cheeseworld at Allansford just outside of Warrnambool where we had a good look around. We visited here a few years back and it has certainly gone ahead in that time with renovations to improve the look and an extended cafe which today seemed to be filled with workers from the processing factory over the road. The cafe takes up a third of the space and the remainder is taken up with sales or cheese products, biscuits, jams and lollies and souvenirs. We love our cheese so went directly to the fridges to see what was on offer, there was a great mixture of cheese available and lots of varieties and flavours we hadn't seen before, however, they were all very expensive. We then had a look at the biscuits and crackers but they weren't priced and I didn't want to have to take them up to the counter and go through the pricing with someone particularly when there didn't seem to be many staff on hand. We did the same with the lollies so we just put them back in the bins.
We had decided to stay at a park in Killarney where we had stayed about 2 years ago, it was on a football oval and well positioned between Warrnambool and Port Fairy, we had power and there are a couple of spots with water and we were lucky enough to get one of these. The campground is a short walk from the beach, just over the sand dunes, the beach is beautiful and is a short distance from both Warrnambool and Port Fairy. Lots of rabbits and very large rats can be found in the sand dunes and there are lots of signs up to say there is currently baiting going on. There is a manager on site but he wasn't here when we arrived so we set up and I prepared lunch and after lunch we drove back to Warrnambool. We headed directly to Logan's Beach because it is this time of year that the whales pass through, this is the third time we have visited at the correct time but unfortunately third time wasn't lucky but the beach is spectacular and the views are a small compensation for missing out on the whales. We were about to leave when a group of surfers turned up so we stayed and watched them go out to take advantage of the good conditions.
On our way back to our campsite we stopped off at the Hopkins River boat launching site. This is a beautiful wide river that runs through Warrnambool and eventually heads out to the bay. There is a river cruise business advertising cruises from here but the boat we saw moored didn't seem fit for cruises.
