Canberra and The War Memorial

We all drove off together to Canberra to visit the war memorial and also because I wanted to visit the ACT because once I had done this I would have visited every state and territory in Australia since July last year. We took off really early in the morning, which was easy for Matt and Lyndal because they are up before the crack of dawn each morning with their young children. We called in for a coffee in Merimbula and then we were on our way. We loved driving over the Snowy Mountains it is such an impressive part of our country and you almost feel like you are on a different planet, we had a couple of stops on the way with the children but generally had a good run through and arrived in Canberra around 11.00 am. We drove straight to the War Memorial as this was our reason for visiting, I am so happy that everyone was really impressed with this visit because everyone came mainly for me. We first visited here 30 odd years ago and how it has changed in that time. This would have to be the best museum we have ever visited and we have traveled quite extensively. You wouldn't expect much interest from children the age of Matthew and Lyndal's but this was not what happened. Our eldest had lots of questions about war and people dying. There was something here for everyone but unfortunately we didn't have enough time to really do justice to the memorial, we were here for 2-3 hours but the get the most value out of this experience you really need two days. We didn't do this but we would highly recommend getting the tour earphones to make your visit more informative. We were all moved by the horror of the loss of life and the suffering by so many young people who were trying to protect our freedom. All this and it is free entry, if you haven't visited you need to put this on your list of must do's. We had security to go through before entering but even this was carried out with little fuss and pleasant exchanges. After the memorial we drove to Hog's Breath in the city for lunch, we all enjoyed our lunch here and then after lunch we headed off home stopping at Cooma on the way back for an ice cream or milk shake. Everybody had a great day but we were all really tired from the driving.
