We have been members of Tahbilk winery now for about 20 years and often purchase wines from them that are delivered free of charge. We used to visit here quite often taking the boat trip between Mitchelton Winery and Tahbilk I am not sure that boat trip is still running as it was, I think now you can book it for a group but it doesn't run regularly. Not to worry it has been quite a few years since we have visited and we were looking forward to coming back and visiting the new Tahbilk Cafe. The Tahbilk buildings are reminiscent of old wineries and we love that they haven't been revamped to look like every winery we visit. We both enjoy climbing down those narrow steps to visit the cellars that wind on forever, the smell of fermenting wine is both unpleasant and memory invoking and after a while you no longer smell the wine but feel the even temperature in the cellars and seeing all those huge barrels makes you feel part of the process. We came back up to the cellar door and tried a few wines we don't normally drink and chose a couple of bottles to take home with us. We have never had a bad wine from here so I was confident in branching out a bit. We then drove over to the Tahbilk Cafe for lunch. We were a bit early but the lovely manager accommodated us and led us to a table over looking the river, very pleasant. When the waitress came along we chose a couple of wines and asked for the lunch menu so we sat in this very pleasant environment sipping on our wines checking out the menu. We really wanted a cheese platter but the one listed didn't look so inviting so when the waitress returned we explained what we wanted and she explained the platter which then didn't sound too bad, we also ordered a sharing plate of croquettes that she recommended just to round off the meal. We enjoyed each dish, the croquettes in particular were very good and the grapes and fruit accompanying the cheese platter were very tasty. Our waitress on the day was excellent in making sure we had a good lunch and was very friendly. The meal when we went up to pay we thought was quite reasonable and all up this was a good experience.
