Vila Real was our last stay in Portugal and it was chosen because of its proximity to Porto, so we knew nothing about the town, so it was rather exciting when we started climbing through the mountains and kept going until we felt like we were on top of the world looking down. We kept going higher and higher working our way over bridges and through other small villages until suddenly we came to the sign telling us we were in Vila Real. We seemed to be on a plateau with the valley far below us and the views from our room were spectacular. The town itself was quite big rather like a small city in some ways but in others a quaint little village. We wandered the streets and came to a lovely little restaurant for dinner. Our accommodation hung off the side of a cliff and the balcony in our room had a huge drop below it but fantastic views. There was a resident parrot in the Hotel that welcomed each guest as they arrived, I wasn't quite sure it was real until I viewed it.
