The fountain in the square wasn't working on the day we first arrived at Evora and I gather from the other comments I have seen on this area that is the norm, but it is a beautiful piece of work in a very busy interesting square. There is a lot of activity around this area which has a wonderful range of shops and eating outlets. You can easily spend an hour here just walking around and then I would suggest you sit at one of the fantastic food outlets in or around this square. There are also mobile food trucks offering a range of goods from chestnuts to ice cream and all the food is good. We came back to this square time and time again either to have a look around or to eat at one of the cafes or restaurants.
