When we visited Venice my very first wow moment was when we walked out of the train station onto the Grande Canal. We all know that Venice is surrounded by water but it is still a startlingly beautiful sight to see the canal dividing the streets of these beautiful old buildings. We caught a 'big bus ferry' over to St. Mark's square and I think our first surprise was how big it was. On one side you have the Palazzo Ducale which is a magnificent building and then walking from there you follow avenue of shops offering all sort of goods for sale. We left the square and had a beer on the grand canal which cost us 30Euro for 2 and we loved it, for the experience it was probably worth the money but if you don't want to spend that then visit one of the cafes in the square, it would also be very enjoyable. We also visited the Bridge of Sighs while at the square and when we returned to the station we walked along the streets of Venice enjoying the cafes and novelty shops. I bought a couple of masks as you really need to do while in Venice.
