Visiting here had been recommended to us by a local who we were talking to on the first day we arrived in Broken Hill so we put it on our list. There seems to be set times for tours which we weren't aware of before visiting so we turned
up about 10.30am ready to learn something but I don't really think we were expecting much when we entered. We rang the bell at the entry as we were instructed by the sign and an older gentleman came to open the door and told us where to go, we walked through what looked like an underground mine to the viewing area and took our seats. We had interrupted the demonstration as it turned out so we sat so that we could hear the remainder of the presentation, I don't think it had long started so we hadn't missed a lot. The gentleman who let us in is the owner of the attraction and had worked in the mines for a long time and had seen many changes over the years. He had a great understanding of the mining industry and had models to demonstrate the way mines worked then and now. It has and is very hard work but I think it is a bit easier in many ways with progress and obviously much safer now. After the presentation we walked through to look at his artwork which depicts mining scenes and the local area. He uses crushed minerals in his work which gives a very specific effect and when we asked how he works he went on to explain that the drawing is the hardest part and then he fills it in with the minerals. On exiting the attraction it is worth going through to look at the hundreds of dolls and bears that his wife makes or collects.
