We were moving from Rome down to Sorrento so we organised to be picked up by car at Napoli train station and on our way to Sorrento have a two hour stop over at Pompeii. Friends we were travelling with were concerned this wouldn't be long enough to spend there but my husband and I felt it was long enough for us and that turned out to be true. It is an amazing site and well worth the visit and if you wanted to walk the whole area you would probably need a couple of days and an early start. We found we experienced the feeling of the devastation of the site in the areas we walked through and the rest to us would have just been more of the same but we wouldn't have missed going there. It was quite a hot day and there is very little shade so I would suggest sunscreen, umbrella and lots of water. There is a shop there that sells a range of goods which was very handy but it looked completely out of place. There is an interesting large shed where items have been stored that have been found on the site and that is worth seeing and there is also a bit of a museum that is worth going through. There are a few restaurants that serve drinks on the way out down the hill which were a very welcome sight to us on leaving.
