If I hadn't previously read about this Basilica when I was researching the areas we were visiting, we would probably have not walked through the the very plain and obscure entrance. What a surprise when you do take the time to wander inside and you take in the magnificence of this amazing building. Not only will you be surprised at the size, particularly the height of the walls, because it is much bigger than you think from the outside, but the beauty of the design and artwork that covers the walls, floor and ceiling is breathtaking. What particularly appealed to me personally was the contrast between the muted colours in the artwork and the gaudiness of the artifacts and columns in the chapels. Michelangelo commenced work on this building and over the years it was added to by other artists/architects. The Basilica is a short walk from Termini Station and the first stop on the Big Bus Rome tour, my suggestion would be to look through this attraction before hopping on the Big Bus for the rest of the ride.
